Empowerment through Environmental Change

Page history last edited by Ehle so fly 13 years, 6 months ago

From Civic Engagement Experience:

The Civic Engagement Fair was a pretty good event, and although it was required for us to attend, it would’ve been pretty hard to attend class without stopping by. After making a quick lap of the fair, I quickly realized that all attendees were not NPO’s but also included student organizations and the like. So, I made my rounds and noticed some familiar agencies: The Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and Big Brothers and Sisters. One of the on-campus organizations caught my eye, the SEAS (Student Environmental Awareness Society) club.

The members of the SEAS club were boisterous, wearing gaudy hard hats, and overall just causing a commotion. They definitely caught my attention, at least. So, being that I already have a personal interest in environmental activism, I began to inquire about what it was their organization does, who they work with, and how they’re reaching out to the community.

I discovered that they work closely with the Sierra Club, a nationwide organization dedicated to the protection of the planet and its fragile ecosystems. This organization helps to plan larger undertakings done by the student led organization and also broadens the student’s ability to make a difference. Modeling, and working with, a well-established organization can only be a positive thing.

I also stopped by the Big Brothers and Big Sisters booth to learn a little bit more about their organization. I was aware that they pair adults with youth from the community, as I’m sure most of you were, but I wanted to learn more about what kind of volunteering schedules they offer and what kind of kids they were reaching out to. Turns out that they have programs where you have to meet with your assigned ‘little’ a minimum of twice a month. Twice a month, sounded pretty reasonable to me so I signed up.

Overall, I think it was a worthwhile event to hold and I’m definitely glad I went and learned about what kind of organizations are out there in our community and on campus.

I was thinking how we can tie a couple of social issues together, here are some ideas.

Two problems that are cause for concern in the community are the environmental well being of the county, Downtown more speicfically, and the obvious homeless and unemployment of the area. I think that through the Greenification process of Downtown we can create jobs for some of the local unemployed and down trodden citizens. By allocating job positions to the underprivaleged, we can help give them something to attach themselves to. This will help foster a feeling of self worth and help in the re-socialization of the discouraged population as well as improve the environmental-friendliness of our beatutiful downtown area. More ideas to come..

I also was a member of big brothers big sisters, I had to meet once a week for a whole year. It is hard to get through to the youth when we appear so young but this is deffinatley a cool idea to helping better the education of the youth-Ehle

These are my suggestions to make your writing to explore better!

1) Add a catchy introduction so it grabs the audience's attention. Use ethos, pathos and logos. Is there an experience you have that relates to this subject? If so, write it! (i would suggest the 2nd paragraph where you state you like environmental activism)
2) Did you take notes from your interview? If so, I would maybe include some quotes from one of the representatives from SEAS.
3) What has SEAS or the Sierra Club done to help the environment? Make your audience believe they deserve the money.
4) Big Brothers and Sisters? What does this have to do with Environmental Change?
5) Include some facts: Do research!

Trying to come up with ideas for an essay, and then organize it. But thanks for the tips
