License Arguments

 

 

 

In the first video, FloRida, uses the same lyrics as Dead or Alive in the second video. The song from the second video was written in 1988. The version created by FloRida was released in 2009 and, just like the original version, topped music charts in the U.S. and U.K. In spite of its success on charts, FloRida faced many criticisms about the meaning of the lyrics. While the lyrics from the original song were more literal, the lyrics in FloRida's version referred to developing a sexual relationship with a stripper.

ShareRiff Says: Midterm Reflections

 

Ronald, you and I both know the same thing: you have great ideas, you are able to articulate those ideas clearly and cogently, but you have yet, at least in the 1102 context,  to fully apply yourself to the task of composing those ideas so that they can be heard by, and fully resonate with, others. I am very encouraged by your WTI blog, where you sample from topical trends and language (cyber-bullying) and introduce provocative concepts (domestic terrorism). Here, you take the process seriously, you use the electronic medium (color-coding, images, different fonts) to speak to your peers and signpost both your process and the ideas that you are sequencing with the intent of crafting an informative essay. This is great, and it helps us understand where you are and where you intend to go next. I think that you just need to make some decisions about audience, genre, and purpose--doing so will leave a lot of people out, but it will allow you to craft specific appeals and focus on how to arrange old (appeals) and new information; doing so will make foreclosures on some kinds of writing, but will tell you exactly what techniques are appropriate and necessary for buttressing your paragraphs with reasoning and evidence, and how to connect these more fully developed paragraphs to a catchy thesis, one worthy of recapitulation here and there throughout your essay; doing so will also give you confidence, because you will know exactly why you are writing this piece, and not composing in some other genre for a different audience that has different knowledge and expectations about the topic that serves as a springboard for your informative writing. My prescription is simple: get back to what you did with your blog week 1: have fun with your writing 3 times a week. Warm-up exercises, basically! Then, once you get into a rhythm, you will have the will to carry out the best ideas that come out of your blogging, and design/arrange/develop those ideas into full-blown compositions. The ethos you bring to your peers when you offer feedback is very engaging, and very helpful. You have freed up your writing, already--just think what a consistent practice will bring. For one thing, it will create meaningful opportunities for applying the principles offered by the MHG, and putting together a draft that will garner the attention and feedback of your peers. And it will add another dimension to the feedback you offer to others, which will in turn begin to impact your own rhetorical strategy.  I know you can do it.
