I’m going to write to describe what it means to be a good leader, and the path one should take to get there. After reading everyone’s comments (which I greatly appreciate) I think I'm going to lean my essay more towards Qualities and Skills that make a good leader, rather than what it means to be a good leader. I think that is what I was trying to convey at first, but thank you all for helping me clarify that! After going through and redoing my list of skills and qualities I thought would make up a good leader I found 30 things in which I plan on elaborating about. I found most of these online but I also used some that I knew of from past experiences. I was thinking about also in my essay writing about my past knowledge and experiences and how I used these different skills and qualities to make sure that I was being a good leader. I also want to used these skills, what I learn about them and elaborate on, to put in paragraph for the lead learn serve students and how we can use some of these skills, some of us may already have and need to just refresh or others of us need to learn more about, and explain how by doing this we all could learn how to be come better leaders, as we already are, together.

I agree with all your points that add up to being a good leader, I am interested in seeing how are you going to relate this to the lead learn serve program and making a difference in our community. - Ehle

I think that I am going to add in at the end of my paper how these things can be related to the Lead Learn Serve program. :)

What exactly do you mean by all of the words listed above? Define, define, define. Motivation towards what? Commitment to what?

I've gone back and defined these words and added more words to my list that I feel are qualities and skills needed to be a good leader. So thank you for the encouragement!

I met a man who was motivated and committed to being drunk all of the time. He feels it is his responsibility. You can always rely on his being wasted. Sometimes he even "goes that extra mile" and downs a bottle of mouthwash. This man, however, would NOT be a good leader. -

This is a good point, I will be sure to give specific examples in my essay about what I mean when I say go that extra mile. It may also be a good idea to give examples, like the ones you have given here, one hwo to NOT be a good leader.

To piggyback off of the previous comments, your points are really good. Maybe give some examples of good leaders and analyze how those leaders could have been better. Some leaders have been deemed "bad" but their leadership qualities are what made their leading efficient. -Jasmyne

Thanks Jasmyne, this is a very good point and something I will keep in mind when I am finishing up my paper.

"Some leaders have been deemed "bad" but their leadership qualities are what made their leading efficient."

Exactly. I can think of a view examples right off the top of my head. Hitler had all the qualities necessary to be a leader, including the "desire to go that extra mile". His leadership didn't quite work out for the best, though.

Adam

This is a very good point! I will have to be sure I put this point in my paper as well, it is also very true, something that I will keep in mind when I am writing my paper.

i think that your reasons are very good. i wrote about some of the same things in my essay about being a good leader. i like how you're going to talk about how to become a good leader.-Jenna

Thanks Jenna! I appreciated the positive feedback!

Perhaps instead of exploring the qualities of a "good" leader, which as many have pointed out is a judgement call, you could explore the qualities of an "effective" leader. Then you could actually explore why some very bad people were able to have so many people follow them. As Adam mentioned, Hitler is one such person; Jim Jones is another. He is the whole reason why when people follow a leader or philosophy without question, they are said to be "drinking the Kool Aid."  - April

I like your idea of using "effective" instead of "good". It makes it seem more professional and I like that. I also like your idea to explore why some bad people were able to have many people follow them. I like your ideas a lot thank you!

Hey this is a good start, what specific audience are you trying to persuade with this essay though, what particular non profit organization does this essay relate to. do more research and youll be well on your way. Awesome ethos by the way! - Ehle

Thanks Ehle! Do we need to have a particular non profit organization in mind at this point? Thanks for the good advice!

Great organization of your WTE ideas! There is a lot of good research to be found on this topic, such as examples of great leaders, like a president or an artist. Can't wait to see your paper form together! I will be happy to give you more feedback when there is more to be fed back on. :) - Sheena

I think the organization of your rough draft will help you alot when you are writing your paper, it puts your ideas in a good order and i think it will give you an opportunity to flow from one idea to the next easier. I also wrote about some of your idea's in my paper and i think you did a good job showing examples of the power a good leader can have.
