My first thoughts upon learning about the Happenings, Fluxus, and the like go to Black Rock City. It’s an invented village that only happens for one week a year in the scorching Black Rock desert of Nevada - just outside “The biggest little city of the world”, Reno. For the initiated, of course, I’m talking about Burning Man. For the uninitiated, it’s virtually impossible to explain what Burning Man IS. Like the Happenings, it’s different for every participant. It’s different depending on when you arrive and where you live. It’s depending on the year you go. At its core, Burning Man is about radical self-reliance expressed through art and participatory living with ~50,000 of your . But what does that mean? Exactly. Yes.Like the neoDada-ists and Fluxus, Burning Man rejects commercialism. The event inspires and encourages a ‘gift economy’ whereby you cannot sell anything you bring to Burning Man. However, you can gift it to the community in trade or just to be nice. The organizers do not sell anything except an entrance ticket, ice, and coffee/tea. As a participant/spectator/inhabitant of Burning Man, you must rely on yourself and bring all your necessities to include water, food, shelter, and the items you deem necessary to LIVE.Where you are now - in your comfy chair and air conditioning - is called the Default World. When you go to Burning Man, you are Home. You are with the like-minded. You are with those that made an effort to be there. It’s other worldly. It’s like being on the moon with it’s grey brown dust covering everything you own in less than a day. Your neighbors are dressed (or undressed) showing their real plumage - not the feathers demanded in the Default World. But again, those that have not been ask, what IS Burning Man. To some it’s a week long rave. For others, it’s an opportunity to commune with Gaia. For others, it's an art show. Like life, Burning Man, is what you make it. I recommend you live it at Burning Man.
