Write!

Blog 1: finding composition in the field

step one: Find a friend, family member, co-worker, or anyone you meet, and ask permission to record audio or video of a conversation you will initiate about composition. You might ask for a definition of composition, or you might ask your interlocutor about his or her own compositional process. Or, if you would rather transcribe directly to paper or to your word processor, you can conduct the interview in this manner.

step 2: review and transcribe--into a text document, and then onto the wiki--the most interesting, instructive, or problematic moments of your recording session. You might write up a sequence of highlights, or, if the "best capture" comes in the form of an unbroken narrative, you may prefer to isolate and transcribe that highlight. Upload your transcription to the wiki.

Blog 2: going "second-order"

Create a new wiki page, and write about the transcription process. Provide any "supplemental" information that you want to share--about the set and setting of your recording session, the ease/difficulty/effects of moving sound to wiki, or anything else that comes to mind. Be sure to link this exercise to your main wiki space or "hub."

Blog 3: thinking of linking....and then doing it!

Make links between 2 or more peer "finding composition in the field" blogs. In your wiki space, write about why you made this connection.

Blog 4: Select a creative commons license for your wiki space, and provide a rationale explaining your selection. Intellectual property/commons: what's at stake? Follow the steps of this assignment prompt and at the creative commons web site, select a license, and provide a rationale explaining your selection. If you get stuck, post your questions to the Help Page in the Side Bar.

Read....and write some more!

1. Link Pile

Question: what is emergence, and what does it mean to you?

-read the wikipedia article dedicated to the topic "emergence"

-follow at least 5 links. copy and paste these links into your (wiki) workspace. Why did you choose these links? Where did they take you?

-find a point where you would like to add, alter, or edit the text of the wikipedia article, or the text of any of the links you followed. Copy and paste that text to your (wiki) workspace, and give attribution.

300 words.

Then, post the links at our wiki space, and share the best link you found on our common Link Pile.

2. 4311: Craft of Research Chapter 1. 6319: Swales and Feak Chapter 1.

3. Weston: both Chapter 1 and the appendix.  As you read, watch the Recent Changes page on our wiki. After reading and reflecting, select some writing--a paragraph, a sentence, or even a phrase--from a peer's wiki space that resonates with something you read or that came to mind while reading these chapters in Weston, and paste it to your page. Explain the connection, and then create a link back to your peer's page.

4. McCloud's Understanding Comics Chapter 1. Reflect on McCloud's perspective on medium and genre. Perform a similar analysis on a different medium or on an specific example of a convergence of media. In your example an analysis, what is the relationship between genre and technique?
