In class: linking in thinking is linking is thinking is linking.....

write/paste your thoughts, reflections, insights from class today, here, on this page.

Class today was different, we spent a lot of time, working on writing process,  I do not believe today was effective, most student were bored and unconcerned. The classroom still seems to be completely against the newly introduced PBworks. Assignments still seem kinda fuzzy at times but eventually they get done. Class is cool, but I don't really think your on the same page as everyone, We will get there though.- Aberlyna Danelle <3

Class today was confusing because I kept having to go in and out of class to tend to my contact. Everytime I started to get something in class, my contact would bother me and I would have to leave to go to the bathroom to tend to it. This "PBworks" is confusing at best but I know it is going to get better because I felt the same way in the beginning of ENC 1101 in the summer, when blackboard was introduced to us. I feel after a couple more days of doing work on this thing, I'll have this down to a science. I'm on the right road it's just some traffic on my way there. - Caleb F

Class is still a bit confusing to me. I don't even care about blackboard anymore. It's something I have to forget about and get used to the wiki; at least for this class. I agree with where aberlyna was coming from when she said we're not on the same page. I don't want to say we're dumb, but it's taking a bit longer for us to just grasp the concept. But I do think that wiki MIGHT be the future...eventually...through generations, we'll have to learn what it is. -ChocolatePrincess;) (Jasmyne Black)

Write!

to be completed before class on Thursday: 1102 week two blogs each of us will compose individual responses of at least 3 paragraphs and post to the wiki. Then c&p your posts onto the pages that Aberlyna created in class today. Great job!

For your convenience, I am linking both prompts here, as well:

Lead, Learn, and Serve : incorporate samples from this wiki, your experiences, your hopes, and from Bowden and Scott's "What is Service Learning?" and create a 3 paragraph blog. Then, fold it into the community mix!

Definition exercise: what is a journey? When Aberlyna samples Arthur Ashe's definition of success ("Success is a journey, not a destination"), a wiki furor ensues whereby we must form community around a different definitional question, posed by Jasmyne aka JazzieBee: "So if success is not a destination but a journey, what is the definition of a journey?"

Ethnography Assignment

"ambulatory anthropology: the theory of the derive as a path to an interview"

The basic idea: You are an ethnographer/detective/USFSP student charged with contributing to a rich data set, a data set that will become part of a larger body of information and evidence that we will use to find out who we are and what we are going to do with our LLS opportunity. In this routine, we will focus on critical needs in Pinellas County, and use this lens to find out what is happening, what isn't happening, what needs/could/should happen with the two $5,000 grants that we will offer to the nonprofit community. Go with what/who you know, and/or go where you want to go, and focus on the particulars--the minutiae, even--of your case/scenario (reflect on the "what are the causes that fire you up?" survey). Your individual ethnography can and should be quite different from the other peer ethnographies that you will nonetheless be carefully monitoring as they coevolve alongside yours on this very wiki. Due to this inevitable differentiation, the collective net that we cast will be that much more informative, the collective ethos we are cultivating will be that much more credible, and we will be that much more prepared for what lies in store in the coming weeks.

In the 1950s and 1960s, a group of writers known as The Situationist Internationale offered one way to think about the method of mobile observation. The theory of the derive, as articulated by Guy Debord, is a concept designed to promote exploration and open-minded observation of urban spaces. On a “derive” observers are to, at least temporarily, try to resist to resist standard descriptions of architectural styles discussions focusing on already available statistics and demographic percentages, in order to fully embrace and understand the reality of actually observing and inhabiting the environment. In other words: open, empty, observe, describe.

Let's try this idea: seek out nonprofit organizations in the community. In advance, carefully consider: what do  you want to find out? What form of address will you use when you make your introductions? How will you succinctly explain your interest and motivations? The ethnographic tradition advises: ask questions, and listen. What is the mission of the nonprofit agency? What does the nonprofit agency do for the community?

Of course, the Civic Engagement Fair will provide an opportunity to do begin this fieldwork. But the fair will be busy and crowded, so you will also want to find your own path out into the community. If, by a process of sharing our writing early and often, each of us grows our own ethnography of a local nonprofit or a phenomenon/problem that we believe is important enough to weave into our discussions and deliberations that will determine the tenor, topics, and scope of our NOFOs, then we will be able to cover quite a bit of ground. Basically, we want to know: what do they feel are Pinellas County's most critical needs? How have they or how do they plan to respond to these critical needs? Write up your responses and post them to the wiki. We will then know more about how to write a NOFO.

Finally, write about this effort and post it to the wiki. Post your descriptions, reflections, interviews, or any documentation of what happens to your wiki page as documentation and rough draft for further revision. All of this work will become part of your Writing to Explore portfolio!

See you tomorrow at the Civic Engagement Fair!

come prepared, with notebook, writing utensil, and a handful of questions for the nonprofits who will be here. Basically, we want to know: what do they feel are Pinellas County's most critical needs? How have they or how do they plan to respond to these critical needs? Write up your responses and post them to the wiki. We will then know more about how to write a NOFO.
