Response to April's "Giving Heidegger the Bird"
I'd like to read more about Congo African Grey parrots' social habits/characteristics in the wild in opposition to their lives as pets. Do we change the way the birds are by taking them into our world (being in the wild, a being in the wild vs. being a pet, a being that's a pet)?
You mention that the words Henry said were not of his own making, but what about the relationship you had with him? Henry's actions, in a pet-owner setting, were interpreted by you as emotions and affections. Were they real or perceived by you as real? Does it matter? Great question!! Do each of you benefit from the relationship? How?
I agree with the class in that you should take a lot of the Heidegger biography out and focus on the idea of his you're disproving.* Tell us more about being! Relate.
As for the second bird, Sunshine, I think the name "lovebird" can tie everything together. Why are they called lovebirds? Describe the love present in your relationship in your terms and bird terms.
I love all the personal narrative in this piece, but I think you could better manipulate that story to stick it to Heidegger.
* Yes, I agree. Let us see why you don't agree with Heidegger in addition to the fact that he is a Nazi. Tell us more. We know you don't like him because he is a Nazi. Pretend he's not a Nazi and still convice us he is incorrect. - Trina
