A Lack of Feedback

My Exploration: Aberlyna Jones

Feedback: describes the situation when output from (or information about the result of) an event or phenomenon in the past will influence an occurrence or occurrences of the same (i.e. same defined) event / phenomenon (or the continuation / development of the original phenomenon) in the present or future. When an event is part of a chain of cause-and-effect that forms a circuit or loop, then the event is said to "feed back" into itself. (Feedback wiki)

Feed-Back

1

a: the return to the input of a part of the output of a machine, system, or process (as for producing changes in an electronic circuit that improve performance or in an automatic control device that provide self-corrective action)

2

a: the partial reversion of the effects of a process to its source or to a preceding stage

b: the transmission of evaluative or corrective information about an action, event, or process to the original or controlling source; also : the information so transmitted (Merriam Webster)

Sunrise hits your face you wipe the crust out of your eyes to a new day. You get out of your bed grab your coffee, your laptop, and then you’re off ready start whatever may come your way. Why are you so eager to get to work today? Yesterday you turned in a report that was sure to set the office “on fire,” a report you spent months on to make perfect. You are absolutely sure that after a pre-selected groups of co-workers read your report you will be considered as “that guy” and get the job as president on this assignment. With clearly expressed ideas and research to back it up, your idea will set the conversation curve. It will touch everyone in some way and cause them to look deep into themselves to find ideas to help build on your initial topic. This idea was going to take you straight to cooperate. You are so excited you cannot help but to do a little dance in the elevator on the way up to your floor. Quick hellos to Dianne and Susan as you dash into cubicle, then to your desk to log on to your worker forum. You panic, there is not one response, not one comment. Technical issues?  Possibly, you go to your boss. Before you even open your mouth he says, “the report was amazing. Take your arguments to the next level” You scurry back to your desk, bummed. How could you possibly take your arguments to the next level you truly put all you have in to this paper. Bye bye promotion, your stuck.

Feedback is given unconsciously pretty much every day. Honey, this tie looks more professional, “take a walk in his moccasins,” how about you do this instead because… are all different kinds of feedback we give to each other. Feedback sparks new ideas and causes us to think outside of the box. Feedback is necessary individual and groups it gives writings perspective. What would happen if no one ever gave feedback? What kind of feedback is more effective?  I’ve found what I truly want to write to explore.

Why do I care about feedback? After personally experiencing the feeling of being stuck in class I asked myself why? While others had ideas hitting them like dodge balls. I had a topic, a plan, and no where to go with it. Literally staying up all night doing research and getting no where with my topic. What do i blame for it, a lack of feedback. A generation of ideas didn't happen on my page. I listed what I new and already explored, and without the feedback of others my paper was already complete in a sense.

Would Google have been created if that one kind in English class didn’t say, “  I don’t mind doing the research for this paper I just wished the information was all in one place.” Would myspace have been created if Tom, the founder of myspace.com mother didn’t say, “I wish there was a place I could just see how you were doing online without having to bother you.” What would the world be like if no one ever gave feedback? If no one ever questioned how to make improve the lighting in a room or said I want my radio to be louder. Would we still be living in the dark ages? I believe so feedback is the way we challenge ideas and from these ideas bigger and more creative happenings occur.

“I'm vulnerable to criticism. Any artist is, because you work alone in your studio and, until recently, critics were the only way you'd get any feedback.” -Howard Hodgkin

There are many different ways of exchanging feedback whether its in small group, or some kind of evaluation. After research on Google I discovered that feedback is a hot topic on the scholarly scene. I would do much more research if time was permitted but I did learn that the most effective method of giving feedback is online. “A greater equality of participation are thought to facilitate the exchange of extreme persuasive arguments, resulting in polarization…” (Lea) What this means is that since there’s no issues such as individuality lying in-between the two exchanging feedback it places them on an equal playin. Issues we face in person such as tone of voice and reliability of the speaker truly doesn’t matter online, so better arguments seem to take place. For example having an argument in person if a person creates a good point you are expected to respond immediately. Online you can take the time, do some research then respond and have sources of creditability. This allows polarization, or two separate ideas to merge more effectively.
