Txt 2 the Nxt Gen

Page history last edited by Lauren Campbell 13 years, 4 months ago

I want to kno y so many ppl are so incredibly against academic writing. Is it just not interesting ne more? Was up w/ all this txt wording? I <3 my friends, I <3 my family, I <3 Jimmy, &c. What does that mean ne way?  How can I bgin 2 undrstnd what they r saying? This is starting 2 drive me cr@zy. What happnd to the elevated writers that came from college campuses? What r they going 2 do when they graduate from the university? It scares me 2 think that they r going to b entering the work 4rce n about 4 yrs. What does all of this actually mean tho? Can we stp this frm happening? Is this what is going 2 come out of the schools and in turn b what is tot 2 the next generation?

What scares me isn't that these students r txting each other n shortening the wrds, it's that I'm seeing it in their academic writing. I mean WTF?? Why can't they see the difference btween these types of writing. I can b very professional when it comes 2 writing an essay and switch back when txting my bff. Why can't they grasp this concept? Is it rlly that hard or is the technology actually moving twrd that type of communication.

This my first attempt at a satirical piece. Please help me edit this piece to help me understand some more of the txting language, particularly ENC 1102 students.

This is a timely piece! The issue of academic literacy, in the context of these new literacies, is an important discussion for all of us. The thing is, there is a class of scholars out there who continue to utilize traditional academic literacy and those who cannot 'digest' these types of readings are in danger of taking themselves out of the conversation. Sure, they can participate in mainstream culture, but can they change the world? I don't think so. Our leaders and revolutionaries rely on thoughtful, well-versed rhetoric. Texting may be the medium of pop culture, but that is only a portion of what it means to be literate. That said, texting styles ought to be studied and explored in academic settings. Thanks for bringing this literacy into the stream of our conversation!
