WTI Reflection - Caleb

Page history last edited by Caleb Francois 13 years, 6 months ago

Writing to inform was by far the most difficult style of writing for me in my young career of writing. It took me several attempts before I could master the skill of writing without inputting your own opinion into the writing. As a writer, I like to input a lot of voice and tone to bring my writing to life which was my consequential downfall in each attempt leading to the final draft. Every other sentence I wrote was reminiscent of a writing to convince which is obviously not the style of writing asked for in a writing to inform. This was my most straight forward, non opinionated, boring piece that I have ever written. For me it is very difficult to sit in front of a computer to simply break down and synthesize facts. With no input, or little input should I say, on my part I felt as if I was writing a business statement. Boring, blan and simply avoided by me. This paper honestly had the most procrastination by my part. Not because I knew what I was going to write or because I had an outline and knew how I was going to structure my sentences but simply because I did not want to write it. I must admit though there was much more usage of technology in my writing than just Microsoft word. Unlike my other writings, I had to do weeks of research just to figure out how i was going to word one paragraph of the essay. Each paragraph, although centered around the same topic, took some time of research to find the facts needed to put together a well arguement in a way the audience could percieve.

This is the whole idea behind writing to inform. It is finding information whether from books in a library, sites from the internet or actual accounts from people who have been there and putting it together for other people to see. It is like art on display. It does not just come to you automatically but rather it comes to you after days even weeks of traveling around and seeing new things that inspire you to paint. If there was ever a writing that was not built in a day, writing to inform would certainly take the cake. But what does not kill you makes you better and this writing style did nothing short of that. Out of all my writings I think I learned the most from this one. This writing style not only brought new techniques to my eyes but also taught me perseverance. I would of never thought of all classes, I would learn perseverance from a writing style, but low and behold it happened. I truly wanted to give up and accept an "F" for this assignment. That is how much it frustrated me to sit down and write that piece but I kept going and kept adding a little hear and there and got the job done. I literally got up and beat my chest as I yelled a manly battle cry of success when I finished my final draft. I never thought anything else but a Cowboys game could get me so revved up but writing to inform surely proved me wrong. I made it and I'm proud I did. Kudos to me for finishing a difficult task. Yes!
