Turntablism: The Art of the Remix

Page history last edited by Elizabeth Sellers 13 years, 6 months ago

Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating music using turntables (either phonographic or digital-- I prefer ANALOGUE PHONOGRAPHIC) and a DJ mixer.

I have been interested in turntablism and DJing for 15+ years.  I have a pair of Technics 1200 turntables ("Tech Twelves") at my house and I spin records as often as possible.  I also produced and promoted raves for about ten years, before I got involved in formal event planning and  technical writing. Those were some of the greatest times of my life (to date), and my passion for electronic music has stayed with me even as I have faded out of the club scene and into a more mainstream career path. However, I am still a booking agent for 10 DJs who are my close friends, and I also produce and promote concerts and club nights, averaging about five large-scale events per year.

MY FRIENDS, EVENTS & DJs:

According to Rome Neal's article for CBS, "it's the turntable's least melodic sound that's earned it a more familiar nickname -- "scratch."

"The first scratch is just a basic scratch, which is just back and forth," explains [Berklee College of Music Professor Stephen] Webber. "But that's just the beginning. If you start going faster, if you get up into like eighth notes, sixteenth notes, you call that a 'scribble.' And then you can get even faster, which is called an 'uzi, ' where you're actually just doing a muscle spasm more or less."

Along with scratch technique are the records, where beats, notes, lyrics -- in fact anything -- are used to make music."

Scribble Jam is a music festival that I have attended and promoted for the last ten years.  There are Scribble Jams all over the country, but the one in Cincinnati, Ohio is where I have spent my time.

DJ I-DEE: A friend of mine who lived in South beach until last year. His name is Isaac and he rocks.

THE ANIMAL CRACKERS: These guys are buddies of mine. They're from Cincinnati; they're known all over the country, and have even competed in international scratch competitions (aka "Scribble Jams") like the World DMC Championships
